Our pigs are born and raised outdoors on the farm in the open air. They have paddocks to roam in the daytime and warm beds of straw to rest on. They live in small family groups, and are a picture of health and contentment.
They are fed on fruit and vegetables from the farm and other local farms, and also feed from a local mill. This diet is not the kind of high intensity feed found on commercial pig units, but results in a slower grown, naturally finished animal of superb texture and flavour. Our animals do not have any routine chemical or medical inputs, and are treated herbally in times of illness or injury. At Hedgemonkey Homegrown we believe that animal welfare is a top priority and we will always do our utmost to ensure that our piggies are happy piggies. |

At Hedgemonkey Homegrown we care for the environment as much as we care for our animals. We never use chemicals of any kind on our farm. All fruit, vegetables, herbs, and paddocks are grown without the use of pesticide, weedkiller, fungicide, or any other nasty! The health of the soil is maintained by crop and animal rotation, while animal manures provide fertility.
All animal feeds are natural with no growth promoters, medicines, or animal products, and we harvest rainwater for the animals to drink from our polytunnels. To date we have planted over 2000 native English trees and hedging plants to create a haven for all our local wildlife, as well as a beautiful place for us to work in. This also supplies the animals with shade and windbreaks. In 2001 we planted a native English woodland of about 1 acre, with the intention of periodically allowing pigs to live and play within. As soon as the trees are mature enough to withstand the truffling little snouts, we will introduce the pigs! Possibly in 2010. |
